Catholic school officials facing controversy after revealing Black History Month menu

TheSource.com, The SourceCarondelet High School, an all-girls Catholic private school in Northern California, is facing controversy after serving a menu of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon in an attempt to celebrate Black History Month.

According to NBC Bay Area, students came up with the controversial menu as a result of wanting to celebrate Black History Month during a lunchtime celebration.

Upon announcement of the menu, students and parents alike were highly offended and infuriated. Carondelet principal, Nancy Libby, has refused to speak with NBC Bay Area, but the school’s officials have held an assembly addressing the mishap and issued out an apologetic parent newsletter.

I’d like to apologize for the announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members,” stated Libby. “Please know that at no time at Carondelet do we wish to perpetrate racial stereotypes.”

After having spoken with members of the Black Student Union, several students recommended that watermelon be taken off of the menu. Agreeing to the change, Libby also stated in the letter that both the fried chicken and cornbread will be removed from the menu as well.
