Collision downtown

Earlier today,  a stolen truck collided with a MTA city bus in Manhattan, killing MTA bus driver William Pena, who had been operating a bus since 1996.

Three other people suffered minor injuries and were taken to Beth Israel Medical Center.

The incident happened earlier this morning near W. 14th St. and 7th Ave. in Greenwich Village. Apparently, it ended tragicall when the stolen truck hit the city bus, sending both the vehicles onto the sidewalk and into a scaffolding.

According to police, both vehicles catapulted into the scaffolding, which later collapsed around them, before hitting a 12-story building located on 14th and 7th Avenue. Officials have arrested the driver of the stolen truck and is in custody for questioning.

TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen spoke out and said:

“This is incredibly dangerous work and this exemplifies the dangers workers face day in and day out.

The community is saddened by the horrific situation and sends regards to the dedicated MTA driver’s family.
