State Tells NYCHA to Expand its Board to Further Empower Residents

There is “Power in Public Housing” and now NYCHA residents will be given a chance to be a part of NYCHA’s decision-making process. You can stand on the sideline and talk a good talk or step up to the plate and work within the system for change. NYCHA by population is the 21st largest city in America and with this being an election year there is a huge opportunity for residents to have a voice in local and citywide races. With a change in the NYCHA Board Structure, new City Council members being elected, and a new Mayor coming residents have a chance to make history if they can unite.
In addition to the Power Political Moves mentioned above the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council will soon unveil its jobs, entrepreneurship and training program for young residents; the strategy is to address unemployment, end poverty and reduce gun and gang violence so stay tuned for that information coming this summer.
Applications Now Being Accepted for NYCHA Resident Board Member Positions
The New York City Housing Authority welcomes eligible residents with a passion for serving the community to apply to join its Board.
The New York State law governing the composition of the New York City Housing Authority’s Board recently changed. The NYCHA Board will expand from its current composition of 4 members to 7 and with the exception of the Chairperson, will serve in part time positions. Of the 7 members 3 are required to be NYCHA residents.
In order to consider a large and diverse group of applicants, the Office of the Mayor is encouraging eligible residents who wish to serve to submit an application by July 19, 2013. If you know of a NYCHA resident who would make a good candidate for the NYCHA Board please encourage them to apply.
