How fitting that Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway entered the NBA at a time that arguably the best player ever walked away (for the first time). The year was 1993. Monumental for hip-hop, but also a great year in basketball and sneakers alike.

Many, at the time, that were disappointed in Michael Jordan‘s first retirement found hope in the game by way of a young Penny Hardaway. “Heir Jordan” would become a basketball sensation. Paired next to Shaquille O’neal, the duo would set and break record on a nightly basis. Years later, he would do what Jordan did off of the court with his sneakers. No, not by setting them at ridiculous prices, but due to his impact on the basketball court. Years before Hardaway was awarded his very own signature shoe, his personalized Nikes that hosted his royal blue number “1″ on the back flew off of shelves as fast as he flew threw an open lane; setting the precedent of what his signature line would entail.

Similar to Michael Jordan, after Hardaway’s retirement, his shoes still sold well. That leads up to a recent interview held by Complex Magazine where when asked about his current relationship with Nike, Hardaway responded, “I have a great relationship. We’re still doing contracts and we’re working on the Air Penny 6. I’m in a great place, man. Being retired and having not played the game in five or six years and still have shoes coming out in my likeness is a true blessing.”
