The “Tonight Show” favorite has died.
The spokesman for the family of David Brenner confirmed that the comedian has died after battling cancer. His publicist Jeff Abraham said Brenner died peacefully Saturday night in his New York City home. The comedian has made more than 150 guest appearances on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” as a guest and substitute host in the 1970s.
Brenner’s exposure on the “Tonight Show” made the documentary filmmaker and author into quite the comedian. Before his comedy Brenner helped to write, produce and direct a plethora of TV documentaries which earned him 30 awards. The comedian also wrote five books. According to Abraham, his gravesite will read: “If this is supposed to be a joke — then I don’t get it!.”
The comedian is survived by his wife, three sons and a grandson.
