The rumors surrounding an official universal Hip Hop Museum started surfacing in November 2013 and are now coming to truthful fruition. Last week, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Grand Wizard Theodore organizers made an official announcements, aiming to launch the establishment in Kingsbridge Armory by 2017 (location not final).
There has been a lot of conversation regarding the Rock N Roll HOF inducting Hip Hop artists into it’s class. Some agreeing, some disagreeing. Maybe Hip Hop just needs a home of it’s own. It’s about time the most powerful and monumental culture of the last 20 years gets recognized with something of this nature. The museum will cover all elements of Hip Hop, including rapping, graffiti, breakdancing and DJing.
“Many people have a misconception of what Hip Hop is,” said Afrika Bambaataa, the museum’s chairman. “When they say Hip Hop, they only say it’s the rapper, and there’s a whole culture and movement behind it.”
