New Delhi court sentences four men to life in prison for involvement in gang rape
An Indian court in New Delhi sentenced four men to life in prison for the rape of a call-center operator that took place last year inside of an abandoned textile mill of Mumbai. According to the prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam, the Mumbai court issued the maximum sentence to the four men after they were found guilty of rape, abduction and unnatural sex.
Three of the four defendants were also involved in the rape of another unidentified woman that took place at the same location weeks prior.
Nikam stated that he may seek the death penalty for the men because of their involvement in the two cases. Today the men are setting out to appeal the decision in a higher court.
Since the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old New Delhi medical student back in December of 2012, rape cases are being handled in a more expeditious manner.
