Big Sean discusses his forced throw-away track “Control,” Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica’s verse.
Big Sean sat down with Vibe to discuss the making of his track “Control,” that was discarded from being on his upcoming album Hall Of Fame due to sampling copyright issues.
Sean admits he completed the first verse then sent the track to Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica.
Within a few days, Big Sean received Kendrick’s verse and laughed, not out of disrespect, but out of recognition that this [Kendrick’s verse] “is what [Hip-Hop] needs to get back to… I haven’t seen so many people excited over a hip-hop song.”
Sean went forward in saying he didn’t go back and re-write or re-do his verse because that’s “cheating,” he’s an OG, and not “no hoe a** n*gga.”
Sean and Kendrick talked after and although they’re still homies, rapping is still a sport and where there is sport; there is competition.
