Donald Sterling’s repugnant recorded statements against Blacks sent a shockwave though the NBA players and ownership. social media, and popular society around the world. The backlash was so strong that it forced new NBA commissioner Adam Silver to ban him for life and begin proceedings to force Sterling to sell the team.
But before anything had been confirmed as to whether it was actually Donald Sterling’s voice on the tape, Clippers sponsors started running. At first it was just
Carmax
Virgin America
Mercedes-Benz
and Chumash Casino Resort
Then it started to get ugly. First in the next wave was
Corona
then State Farm
and Kia
Red Bull
Lumber Liquidators
LoanMart
Yokohama Tires
and the death knell…Samsung.
Now that Sterling has been banished from the league some of those sponsors and a few other smaller ones that are popping up will most likely start trickling back in. But for now, the Clippers accountants are twiddling their thumbs, waiting for the money to start rolling in again.
