Mike D'AntoniWell Lakers fans can rejoice as Mike D’Antoni has officially resigned as their head coach according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

D’Antoni signed a three-year deal with the Lakers in November 2012 and there were many reports that he was pushing for the team to pick up his option for the 2015-16 season in order to have job security.  Sources said D’Antoni would not return if the Lakers held their stance and left him in limbo.  It’s unclear if that is the reason for his current departure but the Lakers are coming off one of their worst seasons in team history.

The Lakers finished with 27-55 record and 14th in the Western Conference.  Albeit the failures were mostly due to injuries, most notably that of Kobe Bryant, there’s still many people who believed D’Antoni wasn’t the right fit as coach for the team.  In fact many were upset about his hiring over the Zen Master Phil Jackson.

Well now he’s out and it’ll be interesting to see which names are brought up as his possible replacement.
