On Wednesday night Mike D’Antoni officially resigned as the Los Angeles Lakers head coach. Now the quest begins to find his replacement and one particular person’s opinion holds a lot of weight, Kobe Bryant.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports wrote an article where he suggested former Laker Derek Fisher become the new head coach. He also named some of the prospects that would interest Kobe Bryant.
Bryant will wish for Tom Thibodeau to free himself from Chicago. He loves Jeff Van Gundy, and shares management’s affinity for Euro legend Ettore Messina, who spent a season on Mike Brown’s staff.
Bryant has long admired Byron Scott, but there’s a different ex-Lakers guard who could go much further to regenerate the franchise’s culture and hold the insight into getting the most out of Bryant’s final two seasons: Derek Fisher.
Fisher is currently playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder but he could pull a Jason Kidd and return to his old team as a head coach right after retiring. There’s been rumblings about issues between Thibodeau and the Chicago front office but I haven’t heard anything definitively of him preparing to leave. Byron Scott remains a possibility and I’m sure the list will grow.
