Kevin Durant has many trophies sitting in his trophy case but yesterday he finally received something that he’s been missing while he piled up individual accolades during his basketball career. The Thunder forward won his first NBA MVP trophy. Durant received 119 first place votes to win the award.
LeBron James won the last two MVP award as a Heat, and he’s won four out of the last five MVP. The former MVP holder came in second with six first place votes, while Clippers forward Black Griffin came in third. While Durant won the MVP trophy, all three players are still in the playoffs looking to win a ring.
During his emotional speech Durant thanked everyone from his mother to all his teammates, but he specially thanked his mother for pushing him to play basketball even if he didn’t want to. “You made us believe,” he said. “You kept us off the streets, put clothes on our backs, put food on the table.” His eyes filled with tears of joy as he told his mom she’s the real MVP” just in time for Mother’s Day.
This season Durant capped off the year by winning his fourth scoring title in five years by averaging 32 points, all while leading the team a 59-23 with the team’s point guard Russell Westbrook missing a portion of the season. Durant became the first player since Allen Iverson to win both the scoring title and MVP in the same season back in 2000-01 NBA season. During his run to win the scoring title Durant scored at least 25 points in 41 consecutive games which is the third longest streak in NBA history. Putting up 40 points 14 different times and shooting better than 50 percent from the field.
