It has been three weeks since the Boko Haram, a Nigerian Islamist extremist group, kidnapped over 234 young women on their way to school in Chibok. This massive act of terror has activated a wave of activism in the most populous nation in Africa, with multiple marches from women and men of all walks of life, chanting and picketing, holding signs demanding “Bring Our Girls Back”.
While there have been a number of countries that have discussed the topic and have offered their support, America has sent a group of military advisers to Nigeria to help with the rescue. During Secretary of State John Kerry‘s speech, he talked about the need to help bring this situation to a close safely. “Our inter-agency team is hitting the ground,” he said. “They are going to be working with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s government to return the girls to their families and their communities (according to NBC News)
It is estimated that over 300 girls have been captured, and Boko Haram have promised to sell them off as wives or workers. We hope that more nations will deploy help to the region and find this young women. It is definitely a sad tale, but we will keep you updated, as we find out more.
