After being away from basketball for two seasons, it appears that Stan Van Gundy will be returning to an NBA arena near you next season.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Detroit Pistons and Stan Van Gundy agreed in principle today on a five-year, $35 million deal that will make him both their next Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations.
The Pistons were not the only suitors in the Van Gundy’s sweepstakes. After firing Mark Jackson last week, the Golden State Warriors were quite interested in Van Gundy.
In eight coaching seasons, Van Gundy compiled a 371-208 record coaching the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic. Before being fired by the Magic in 2012, he led them to the 2009 NBA Finals. They lost to the eventual champion, Los Angeles Lakers.
Van Gundy will have his hands full with a Pistons team that finished with a 29-53 record this season. They finished eleventh in the NBA’s Eastern Conference.
