Better late than never.

Twitter Mute

We all have annoying tweeters on our timeline. You know, the ones that are too negative about everything, too positive about everything, use twitter as their personal lecture center, or as a place to air out personal grievances, the ones that type in ALL CAPS, the ones that try desperately to be funny to no avail, or the ones that lack a sense of humor completely. While we all might find ourselves falling under one or more of these categories from time to time, many of our timelines are plagued with these people, and worse they’re usually our good friends who’d be offended if we “unfollow” them.

Now Twitter will offer us all some relief from these irritating individuals with the official debut of the “mute” feature. Most of us are familiar with this feature as many third-party apps  have provided it in some form. However, twitter is finally joining the fight against annoying tweeters everywhere with the feature now available on their iOS and Android apps as well as via the twitter website.

Muting a user is as simple as clicking on said annoying tweeter’s tweet, pressing “more” and selecting the mute option. The user’s tweets and retweets will be banished from your timeline for as long as you have the option selected and the user will unaware. However, unlike many third-party apps Twitter hasn’t released any information on muting phrases and trending topics, but we’ll take this small victory for now.

If you don’t see the mute option via the Twitter website don’t be too worried as product manager Paul Rosania says “In the coming weeks, we will roll out the mute feature to everyone.” So, just wait on it.
