One of the pioneers of “gangsta rap” also pioneered the term ‘OG’ with this album released 23 years ago today
The Original Ice dropped his fourth full length album on this date in 1991 entitled O.G. Original Gangster. The LP was produced by the West Coast icon as well as select production from then newcomer SLJ, DJ Aladdin, Zulu Nation’s Afrika Islam and Donald D. The album also introduced heavy metal band Body Count, who Ice-T later collaborated with to create the controversial Cop Killer record.
The album featured tracks “New Jack Hustler” and “O.G. Original Gangster”, both of which were featured on the soundtrack of the cult classic New Jack City, which starred Ice, Wesley Snipes, and Mario Van Peebles. The album title was also the first time the term “OG” was heard by the masses, thus given birth to a commonly used term in society today within its creation.
OG was named in The Source Magazine’s 100 Best Rap Albums, and in 1991, there weren’t that many albums!
Shout out the Ice-T, Donald D and crew for dropping this classic material on us back in the days! Salute!
