A Detroit truck driver was severely beaten by a mob and hospitalized for over a month
Steve Utash, 54, thought he was doing the right thing when he stepped out of his truck to tend to a 10-year-old child that he had accidentally struck with his truck last month. Instead, he was beaten unconscious by a group of men. Utash was hospitalized due to the vicious attack by the mob and was also robbed. “What did I do? Did I hurt him,” Utash asked as the crowd formed. The boy wasn’t badly hurt and was treated for a broken leg.
Reuters reports that four men are facing attempted murder as well as assault charges . A 16-year-old boy is charged with assault and ethnic intimidation; all five defendants are black. Utash’s son, Joe Utash says his father is extremely grateful for the support from the public . The family received nearly $200,000 in pledges for his medical bills.
