Ray-Rice-wife-presserOn Friday Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice held a joint press conference with his wife Janay Rice to address and express their regrets about the violent altercation that occurred at a casino in Atlantic City, N.J.  The incident left Janay unconscious on video and Rice charged with assault.

Ray expressed remorse about the altercation.  “I want to first off apologize to Steve Bisciotti, Ozzie Newsome and Coach Harbaugh. I also want to apologize to my fans, to the kids, to everyone that is affected by this situation that me and my wife are in,” Rice said.

The Baltimore Ravens posted quotes from the conference but the ones they chose were clearly ill advised.  They posted this quote from Ray but it was later deleted.

Ray Rice: “I won’t call myself a failure. Failure is not getting knocked down. It’s not getting up.”

Clearly a poor choice of words considered Janay was on video knocked out and unable to get up.  It’s still unclear what led to the incident but though Janay was viewed as the victim, she expressed remorse for the role she played in the altercation.

“I do deeply regret the role that I played in the incident that night,” Janay Rice said.  Janay didn’t elaborate on the role she played, although a February court summons stated that she tried to hit her husband, who then knocked her unconscious.

Janay’s apology didn’t play well with the media and spectators who felt like she was apologizing for her abuser and  the Ravens tweets appeared to not shed any light on domestic violence awareness. The two are still working on their relationship and in fact got married one day after Rice was indicted on a third-degree aggravated-assault charge.

“I can say that I am happy that we continue to work through it together, and we are continuing to strengthen our relationship and our marriage and working to being better parents for Ravyn and continuing to be role models,” Janay Rice said.
