Oh the 90′s…
When it comes to cartoons the 90′s was a pivotal time. With channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon rising in prominence and Saturday morning cartoons on nearly every major network, the 90′s were a great time to be a kid.
Anthony Barros rekindles the whimsical nostalgia that was 90′s cartoons in his latest art series “Pixel Nostalgia”. Barros’ 8-bit art collection features iconic characters of the decade such as The Powerpuff Girls and the X-Men as well as some lesser known favorites like Biker Mice From Mars. “Pixel art was heavily used during the ’80s and ’90s, due to the resolution limitations of video games of that time period. Those were my golden childhood years,” Barros told Wired, “I was bombarded by cartoons and comics and games in every direction.”
Each character takes Barros about two to three hours to create, with his colleagues at BoO! Studio in Rio De Janeiro (which he co-founded) lending him suggestions for the next character to get an 8-bit rendering. In over about eight months Barros has created 81 characters, and counting. He may also have something in store for Game of Thrones fans. “Right after finishing the first Pixel Nostalgia poster, people came up with many great suggestions of some other nostalgic characters that didn’t make it to our poster. So, right after we finish the Game of thrones pixel project, we’ll start working on Pixel Nostalgia 2!”
As we wait to see what Barros and BoO! Studios has in store for us, enjoy some of our favorite pieces from Pixel Nostalgia below and purchase prints, posters and more merch here.
