TheSource.com sends special born day salute to the mother of the Black revolution in the U.S.

On this date in 1934 in Detroit, Michigan, Betty Dean Sanders was born, but the world will forever remember her as Dr. Betty Shabazz, the activist/educator who was married to slain human rights icon Malcolm X.

Dr. Shabazz was a champion of education, which was the catalyst that moved her to New York City, where she went to school for nursing and eventually became a Muslim within the ranks of the Nation Of Islam in 1956.

It was her second visit to Temple No. 7 in Harlem, New York when she met a young minister by the name of Malcolm X. They joined each other in matrimony on January 14, 1958 in Malcolm’s former home of Lansing, Michigan. This strong revolutionary raised six girls on her own after her husband was assassinated on February 21, 1965 at the Audobon Ballroom in Harlem.

The Detroit native and budding activist in her own right became a professor of Health Sciences at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York before being named the Director of Institutional Advancement for the school in 1984.

Dr. Shabazz lost her life after a tragic fire set by her then 12 year old grandson Malcolm Shabazz, whose own life was taken under suspicious circumstances in Mexico last year.

Dr. Betty Shabazz is buried next to her husband El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz in Hartsdale, New York.
