Think your instagram is poppin’? Well apparently Rihanna’s moves mountains!
Okay well, maybe not mountains, but it’s pretty influential in the fashion world-according to distinguished designer Tom Ford. In a recent interview with Style.com, Ford suggested that the influence of professional fashion journalism pales in comparison to the social media accounts of celebrities such as Rihanna. Hmm, wonder what Ford’s hubby, former editor of Vogue Hommes Iternational Richard Buckley thinks about that?
Ford stated: ”Something new is happening that I’m just clueing into now—this probably won’t go down well—but customers don’t care any more about reviews or hard-copy publications. They care what picture Rihanna just Instagrammed while she’s naked in bed, what new shoes she has on, how she’s talking about them. That’s what they respond to”
Ford continued expressing his respect for reviews and fashion journalists, despite their supposed lack of impact on consumers.
“There’s no longer the hierarchy of an editor-in-chief on top who hires people with a knowledge and a history and an ability to write and disseminate that information to the rest of the population. Everyone has a voice now, so the person with the loudest voice is the one people listen to.”
Rihanna, whose “influential” Instagram account was left inactive this month, responded to his interview comment by tweeting a link to the article and captioning “He gets it!”
The fashion designer, who is renowned for banning social media at his shows, may have a point. With 13 million followers, Rihanna did have a lot of eyes on her. And whether or not @Badgalriri was your personal go-to for trends in fashion, musicians have become a source of more than just music. Does this mean social media is replacing our more reliable resources on the ins and outs of the fashion world?
