Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling plans to file a $1 billion lawsuit against the NBA according to his attorney Max Blecher and confirmed to Yahoo Sports.
The news comes one day after Sterling’s wife Shelly reached an agreement with former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to sell the team for $2 billion. Sterling has maintained that he has no interest in selling the team and is looking into separate legal action to bar the sale.
The purpose of this particular lawsuit against the NBA, is to receive damages for his termination of ownership and lifetime ban from the NBA. That punishment in addition to a $2.5 million fine was handed down after audio recordings were released of Sterling’s racist comments towards black people during a conversation with a young woman by the name of V. Stiviano.
Shelly was able to complete the sale after experts declared Donald mentally incapacitated. The ruling left Shelly as the sole trustee with the power to sell the team according to ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne. It was also reported that Sterling was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. According to Shelburne, after being examined by two neurologists, they say he’s probably had Alzheimer’s for 3-5 years. Sterling’s lawyer blasts the “mentally incapacitated” claim saying it was a “vast overstatement”. Blecher says Sterling has a diagnosis of a “modest mental impairment”, “… a slowing down”.
Sterling says he’s still evaluating the situation with the sale of the team but “doesn’t want a fight with Shelly. That’s the bottom line”. The NBA resolved it’s dispute with Shelly and says the sale of the Clippers to Ballmer is only pending the Board of Governors vote. Donald is expected to move forward with the suit against the NBA.
