While trilogies typically get a bum rap i.e, “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” or “Revenge of the Sith” depending on what generation you’re part of, “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”, “Transformers Dark of the Moon”, “Matrix: Revolutions,” Microsoft has looked to buck the trend with the release of the third installment of its laptop- tablet hybrid saga, the Surface Pro 3. Here are some things to know about Microsoft’s own summer blockbuster.

The Surface Pro 3 is Microsoft’s entry into finally ending the consumer conundrum of what to get a laptop or a tablet by giving you a device that provides the best of both worlds. To achieve this feat the Surface Pro 3 has made some big improvements on the Surface Pro 2 and added some other tweaks including a 12 inch screen, a re-engineered kickstand, a stylus and a beefed up processor that might make this device the item on everyone’s wish list.

To move the Surface Pro 3 forward Microsoft seemed to really heed some of the complaints about the previous models, one of which was the screen. Microsoft increased the size of the screen to 12 inches, with a 2160×1440 “pixel free” resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio which means you get to see more on your screen than the 13 inch Macbook shows you. The tablet is only 9.1 mm thick and weighs a measly 800g, lighter than the MacBook Air.

One of the key refrains of the new Surface Pro 3 launch was its ability to help people “get things done.” On the productivity end, it looks like Microsoft put a lot of focus. The Pro 3 comes with Intel Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7 configurations and comes with a newly defined fan system to keep the device cool while maintaining performance efficiency and eliminating ambient noise from the device. It also has 15% more battery life than the Pro 2. Other productivity tools include a new kickstand that can fold back to a 150 degree angle making it much easier to work and design on and new touch screen upgrades that increase sensitivity and have been optimized for the stylus. The type cover has also had some tweaks which including a number of tweaks to the trackpad including increasing sensitivity and it being 68% larger. It also magnetically seals to the screen giving the user a firmer feel when using it on a non-stabilized place, like your lap.
