Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods

Seventeen years. It has been seventeen long years since the conclusion of perhaps one of the most celebrated and most recognized anime series of all time, Dragon Ball Z. While the series was followed by Dragon Ball GT, it was DBZ that truly captivated America throughout the 90′s and beyond. By now we’ve all come to terms with the end of the Dragon Ball saga, and probably reminisce on some Saturday mornings with the Dragon Ball Z Kai series — but now we don’t have to. That’s right it’s back!

While the series isn’t making a return with new episodes unfortunately, we will get one last dose of DBZ in the form of an upcoming feature film. The film, entitled Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods finds Goku and the gang (but mostly Goku) brawling against a new super villain, Beerus the God of Destruction, following Goku’s defeat of Majin Buu which marked the apparent end of the series. Goku will have to ascend to the level of ‘Super Saiyan God’ if he has a chance of defeating the most powerful adversary he has ever faced.

FUNimation Entertainment has reported via a press release that the new film comes directly from the father of the Dragon Ball series, creator Akira Toriyama. FUNimation has also teamed up with American cinema advertising company, Screenvision, to bring the film to “over 350 screens across the US & Canada.” The limited theatrical release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods will occur between August 5 to 9th, so be sure to check out the Dragon Ball Z website for info about theaters, showtimes, and all other announcements. Check out a kick ass trailer for it below — do your best to contain your excitement.
