Chicago isn’t just putting out dope Hip Hop into the atmosphere. It’s the stomping grounds for some of the more original and fresher clothing brands as well. Along with 40s and Shorties, CoolSocksBruh is one of the earliest brands to make its case for leading the way in the sock game. In an age where accessories matter just as much a shirt or pants in an outfit, especially in the summer as socks are more visible with shorts weather, it’s about time to step up your sock swag. There’s levels to this. What really caught my attention recently was that CSB starting customizing replica prints of recognizable brands and including their brand name. When I asked one of the founders about the switch up, he replied with, “We leveled up from that era and it was time to show what we can do as creative ninjas.” I had no reply but, “Sho nuff.”
Although the brand name may sound ironic, these guys aren’t joking when it comes to quality prints. They’ve also branched out from socks to include mogs mugs and votive candles. The three head ninjas are Tim, Mouse, and Rob. Tim handles day to day operations and makes the ideas come to life on the socks with his graphic design skills. Mouse is a Saint at St. Alfred in Chicago and helps with the design process. Rob is, as Tim describes, “the young Padawan that is in tune with the youth and helps out with the ideas.” They convene in the Council Chamberz to create their products. These guys have it all thought out. Peep our interview with Tim below and check out the slideshow of their latest products after that. You can cop a pair of your own cool socks, bruh HERE. Did we mention that they do custom socks as well?
For those unfamiliar, New Threads is a fresh column we’ll be executing to celebrate independent fashion companies and the minds behind them. A teenager in an American suburb with a dope idea and a few bucks should be given mad props, if they’re due, just like your favorite luxury brand. We’ll pick a creator that deserves your attention and ask him/her a few questions, including our Final Four questions we ask all of our creators for that month. What’s the requirements to be featured on New Threads? Originality and quality. And please, make something you’d wear proudly. Hit us up on Twitter if you know someone who has or you yourself have a dope brand on the rise. Or send us an email to SYLR@thesource.com.
Why do you think giant screen prints are making such big waves?
Because it’s art that’s reached a new canvas. And a bold sock can elevate any outfit.
How did you arrive on the decision that you wanted to make socks?
Socks are very subtle, and we live the ninja life style. Nobody was really challenging sock designs or appreciating what could be done with them.
You’ve recently ventured into the world of mugs, or mogs. Why of all things, mugs? For those unaware, can you explain what a mog is? Can you give an example of one?
We like to play around and flip things that already exist; Mog is just a way of flipping “mug”. And we wanted to put some of our images on another function item that wasn’t really getting much love.
Can you confidently say that you will always have the most stylish fireplace around Christmas time with these as stockings?
Indeed.
You have a mix of Hip-Hop, luxury brands, drinks/snacks, and pop culture references on your socks. How do you choose what to make next? Where does the inspiration come from?
Inspiration comes mainly from lifestyle and culture, plus the things we see or recognize every day living in Chicago and dealing with the elements.
Will you ever venture into other kinds of socks (dress socks) or even articles of clothing?
It’s very possible. There’s no telling what might happen in the future.
What’s the craziest or most creative custom design you’ve received from someone to make?
We’ve had all kinds of requests, from obituaries to selfies to penguins. Everyone has something crazy they want custom made.
You’ve downsized on a lot of sock designs since you first started? Why is that?
We wanted to separate our brand from the shark biters, and we’re releasing new designs every week to keep things fresh.
I see the Cam’ron votive candle and mug. How would you explain the important of Cam’ron to Hip-Hop and his ever relevant presence in the game and beyond?
Cam is the Boss of All Bosses and we’ve been f*cking with him since COC days, so it was just organic. All praises due to Saint Cam.
What’s next for Cool Socks Bruh, bruh?
Leveling up with new designs and collabs with other creative people and brands.
