A Missouri company, Fruitland American Meat is recalling 4,012 lbs of shrink-wrapped rib eye and other beef products in fear that they may contain parts of the nervous system that can carry traits linked to mad cow disease.

According to the U.S Department of Agriculture the meats were sent to a NY restaurant and a Whole Foods distribution center in Connecticut.while they have shared that that the potentially contaminated meat was produced between September 2013 and April 2014, a USDA directive issued in 2008 prohibits authorities from naming the restaurants affected under the premise that as long as the meat has been removed diners are no longer at risk.

While the agency says the cows showed no sign of illness at the time of slaughter,it was the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection team that found the problem while reviewing the company’s slaughter logs, noting that the manner in which the employees determined the age of cattle could result in the slaughtering of cows younger than 30-months.

After 30-months the dorsal root ganglia is removed preventing the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy better known as Mad Cow Disease. While the USDA has characterized the alert as a Class II recall, meaning a “remote probability” of health problems, but have yet to provide advice for New Yorkers who dine out often, as the symptoms of mad cow disease typically don’t show up in humans for several months and can cause a fatal brain disease.
