A small single-engine plane crash this morning in Westchester County ended the life of the great-grandson of  Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller, shortly after its 8:08 a.m takeoff. Richard Rockefeller who chaired the U.S. Advisory Board of Doctors Without Borders from 1989 to 2010 was flying alone when his aircraft struck tplane14n-1-webrees southwest of the airport and crashed on Cottage St. just outside the SUNY Purchase College campus.

While no onsite injuries were reported, as a Purchase College alum I know this accident has brought the fears of many students to life, since the noise and low flying planes from the nearby airport have been a long-running joke among students for years.

This incident is a scary reminder to those who attend the college and live within the nearby communities as both commercial and private flight paths cross directly above both the SUNY Purchase Campus and surrounding townships.

The FAA says the plane was a Piper PA-46. Dense fog and low visibility were reported near the airport around the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the accident.
