The grandson of Black activist Malcolm X killed in Mexico today

According to the Amsterdam News, who cited a spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy annouced that Malcolm Lateef Shabazz, the grandson of slain civil and human rights icon Malcolm X, was killed in Tijuana, Mexico today. He was 29 years old.

This unfortunate occurrence coincidently happened just days before the celebrated birthday of his revered grandfather who will always be remembered as Minister Malcolm X.

Although circumstances surrounding the death of Shabazz have yet to be released, there have been reports circling around that he has passed away following injuries sustained from being robbed. At this point in time, an exact cause has yet to be confirmed.

Terrie M. Williams, a close friend of the family, made a statement on Twitter regarding the tragedy “I’m confirming, per U.S Embassy, on behalf of family, the tragic death of Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X. Statement frm 2 come.” There have been numerous false reports. Family members have confirmed his passing, however, they have not released any information detailing what had taken place or where.

Much has been written about Malcolm and his past, however, those close to him know that he had a brilliant mind and wanted to help his community. Recently, Malcolm was working on two books and studying in New York at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Malcolm Lateef Shabazz is survived by his mother Qubilah, his aunts Ilyasah, Malaak, Malikah, Gamilah, and a three year old daughter who ask that their privacy be respected during these tragic times.
