Spidey deserves better.
All is not well with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, and now Sony is unsure of its future. When talk of a Spider-Man reboot emerged, fans’ response spanned from “Why?!” to “Thank God” with the latter most prominent following the train wreck that was Spider-Man 3. With Andrew Garfield taking the reigns from Tobey McGuire and an interesting new storyline, The Amazing Spider-Man series was set to eclipse its predecessor. However, instead it continued the trend of Spider-Man films selling less than the previous films (“the Spider-Man movie curse” if you will), accruing $757,930,663 globally compared to Spider-Man 3‘s $890,871,626. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 kept the Spider-Man curse alive selling $704,977,039, down from their unrealistic expectations of grossing $1 billion. Suffice to say, Sony is worried.
IGN spoke to Roberto Orci, who’s a writer of the franchise, who weighed on the future of Spider-Man:
I don’t ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. There’s a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom — there’s an idea of Spider-Man’s going to be one of these characters that’s part of our business. He’s such a popular character. Spider-Man’s not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined.
As of last month, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was officially been postponed to at least 2017, and that’s not necessarily a promise. While there are plans for a Sinister Six and a Venon spinoff to be released within the next two years — which would revolve around the villains within the Spider-Man universe and tie into The Amazing Spider-Man franchise much like The Avengers film series — these films are in production limbo as of right now.
Whether or not we’ll ever see another entry in the The Amazing Spider-Man series is uncertain, leaning toward the unlikely side of things. However, judging from how incredibly awful the last film was — that may be for the better.
