Allegedly two Mosque leaders from Philadephia have been accused of attempting to cuff off the hand of someone they believe stole from them.   The man’s wrist was sliced so badly it required hospital treatment and will require reconstructive surgery.

Police say that the 46-year-old victim was accused of stealing jars of money from the mosque after afternoon prayers.

The officials, described in police reports as the mosque’s imam and amir, dragged the victim to the rear of the mosque, put the victims  hand on on a log and attempted to chop off his hand with a machete, according to a police statement.

He sustained a severe laceration to his right wrist, and was transported to a nearby hospital by medics.

The incident happened July 14th at the Masjid located in the 1100 block of North 63rd Street in the city’s Overbrook section. On July 17th,  Officers served a search warrant on on the mosque, where they arrested Merv Mitchell, also known as Mabul Shoatz. They recovered a 2-foot-long machete from the scene.

The mosque’s imam, an unidentified 35-year-old male, has not yet been located, police said.

Merv Mitchell, also known as Mabul Shoatz, is charged with aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and related offenses.
