There is already monumental scrutiny of the death penalty in the United States, now the execution gone wrong of one Arizona Inmate has given anti- death penalty advocates new ammunition. An Arizona inmate took almost 2 hours to die during his execution. Inmate Joseph Rudolph Wood was pronounced dead at 3:49 pm, almost 2 hours after the execution began.
Wood’s lawyer attempted to have the execution stopped by filing an emergency appeal with both state and federal courts while execution was underway and Wood was gasping for more than an hour.
The Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer said that she would be ordering a full review of the state’s execution process.
“Throughout this execution, I conferred and collaborated with our IV team members and was assured unequivocally that the inmate was comatose and never in pain or distress,” said state Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan.
“This man conducted a horrifying murder and you guys are going, ‘let’s worry about the drugs,’” said Richard Brown, the brother-in-law of Debbie Dietz, who was 29 when she was killed in 1989. “Why didn’t they give him a bullet? Why didn’t we give him Drano?”
Wood was convicted of fatally shooting Dietz and her father, 55-year-old Gene Dietz, at their auto repair shop in Tucson.
