We got the chance to sit down with the former Danity Kane singer as she makes the transition into acting as she stars in the new movie Blackbird that also co stars comedienne Mo’nique her new LP, My Favorite Color, and so much more.

Congratulations on your success, what inspired your new single, “Call It Quits”?
D.Woods: Thank you. I was in a writer’s retreat which is when they get writers together and they write songs for record labels for upcoming projects. I was paired up with my co-writer Tiffany and we really hit it off. Just talking about relationships, you know girl things and that’s how we came up with the concept for “Call It Quits”. The single was originally for another artist things didn’t work out so I decided that I take it for myself.
In three words, how would you describe your newest LP, “My Favorite Color”?
D.W.: Red, yellow, and blue that’s how I describe My Favorite Color because those are the different shades of the project, the different shades of personality you get to know D.Woods for real this time. When you know, somebody for real, you know their favorite color and usually their favorite color relates to their personality. You’re not always one shade all the time and you’re not just one thing all the time. So, you get to know me and these different shades of color.
Who are some of the features on the album?
D.W.: I can’t tell you this yet we’re still finalizing it. You would be pleasantly surprised so expect the unexpected
Congratulations on your acting career, what was the chemistry like between you and Mo’nique for the movie, Black Bird?
D.W.: Thank you. Actually I met Mo’nique for the first time on her Mo’nique Show on BET. She’s really encouraging and it was the first time that I appeared on a late night show going solo and she was like, “Baby not everybody was not meant to be in a group”. I was like “oh okay” (laughs). A few years later, when I walked on the set, she was like, “oh sista, it’s so good to see you, I’m so proud that you’re here”. She’s really encouraging, warm, and accepting. She was giving off great vibes so she look at every take of each part of the movie. She’s executive producers and starring in it. It translates to the performance on screen because we really all came together as people that didn’t know each other but became a group of friends that are in high school that go through somethings in the movie.
How would you describe your character in the movie?
D.W.: Leslie Crandall is my character’s name. She’s definitely a preacher’s kid. We all know what preacher’s kid are like (laughs). She’s trying to break out of the stereotype of what people expect of her. She’s a little innocent when she wants to be but she loose at the same time.
What was it like working with Kandi Burruss on the play, “A Mother’s Love”?
D.W.: It was really really cool. Kandi is somebody that I looked up to for a long time. The fact that she was in Xscape and all the stuff that they did all of her songwriting credits. She’s a graduate of Tri Cities High School performing arts. She was one of the main reasons why I went to that school when I moved down to Atlanta. Many people went to that school OutKast, Jagged Edge. Fast forward, I’m working with her and we hit it off. We’re going on the tour of A Mother’s Love and look out for it coming in September.
Besides the music & movies do you have any upcoming projects?
D.W.: I mean that’s pretty much everything (laughs).Definitely both the music & the label are the focus. I’m the CEO of my own record label Woodgrane Entertainment. I’m always thinking of something else so, just right now that’s where my focus is at the moment.
