Apparently the answer is yes, it seems a team of bio-engineers at the University of Washington have created a “tampon” that may become one of the key weapons within the fight against HIV. Although it imitate its general shape, insertion method and size this new product isn’t a tampon in the conventional sense.

According to the preliminary study published within the journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy here’s how the little sucker works:

The tampon-esque insert is a made of silk-line fabric and filled with the HIV treatment drug maraviroc, when inserted into the vagina the moisture helps the tampon to completely dissolve. As it does it releases the maraviroc which coats and protects the lining of the vagina, while also absorbing into your body to allow the medication easily and quickly, pretty cool right?

Well it seems scientist may have more tricks up their sleeves, just a few weeks ago the HIV-Killing condom was announced and with today’s researchers looking to incorporate protective and preventative measures within as many products as possible the tampon is just the latest among HIV prevention tools along with the HIV-killing condom that prove there is is no reason to go unprotected in this day and age.
