“What’s all the stink over the Redskin name?”
Never one to hold his tongue, Superbowl-winning player and coach, Mike Ditka spoke out about the Redskins name. Siding with Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington team, Ditka claimed that “we’re going to let the liberals of the world run this world.” Shortly after, he called the commotion “so much horse s**t it’s incredible.”
Despite his frank remarks regarding the hoopla, Ditka further stated, “I hope that owner keeps fighting for it and never changes it, because the Redskins are part of an American football history.”
At first glance, Ditka’s rant seems a bit dated. But granted his history with the game of football that dates back to 1955, experience and tradition plays a huge part in his opinion. “It’s tradition, it’s history, it’s part of the National Football League. It was about Sammy Baugh and all the guys who were Redskins way back then. I didn’t think that [Vince] Lombardi and [George] Halas never had a problem with it, why would all these other idiots have a problem with the name?”
