Handmade signs which read “Rain Or Shine. Stay Trill” infiltrated RFK stadium this past Saturday in the nation’s capital and proved despite a “little” drizzle, nothing was stopping this highly anticipated festival. This past Saturday, Washington D.C’s RFK Stadium was home to the third annual Trillectro festival and to be frank, third time is the charm. The inaugural Hip Hop and EDM festival kicked off in high spirits graduating from the smaller venue of D.C Fairgrounds to RFK stadium and supplied the space for an event that was set to break expectations placed from prior years of success.
The Mash-up festival boasted a heavy line-up which featured just the right mix of artists to provide the festival with the perfect recipe for pure madness (in a good way). The culmination of artists that were present on the set list provided the day-long festival with the appropriate mix of energy boosts. There were two stages that were near by at the festival which gave fans the choice to see their favorite artists while exploring and discovering new and upcoming stars in the making. Some of the artists that totally trumped the stage were: headliners Big Sean and Baauer, Migos, SZA, DC’s own Fat Trel and rising DJ/producer Sango.
The presence and feel of the city’s culture was symbolized when DMV’s own and ”Future Bounce” poster-child Goldlink, took stage to provide a performance that left fans along with record label exec’s speechless and in a frenzy. There wasn’t much words that could have been provided for the performance and it’s one of those “you got to be there to understand” moments. Although DC’s Hip Hop and EDM culture was thoroughly in the mix and local acts shined bright, it was the main stage names and surprises that set the festival on a top-spin. Mississippi Duo Rae Sremmurd, started the hysteria off giving fans cuts from their latest tape while dropping their popular anthem “No Flex Zone” while, Atlanta trio Migos had fans rapping in unison to their club hits “Handsome and Wealthy” and “Fight Night”. DJ Money was the honorary festival DJ and in-between sets was dropping some of this year’s biggest hits like Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot Ni**a” (yes, hats were thrown in the air) to even an exclusive DJ Mustard & Wale track that is sure to break the internet in the next couple weeks. This year’s festival definitely lived up to the success of previous years, but Big Sean and Travis Scott took it to another level.
Completely surprising the crowd, Houston’s own DJ OG Chase B brought out Travis Scott who did cuts from his “Owl Pharaoh” and newly released “Days Before Rodeo” mixtape and turned the festival a couple notches. While on stage performing the track “Don’t Play”, Big Sean makes his grandiose entrance and flexed some of his greatest hits & notable feature verses while paying homage to Meek Mill. It was clear these two provided the necessary energy needed to cap off the night and without a doubt represented everything this festival was about. It was evident that the mixture between Hip Hop and EDM sprinkled with the culture of DC made the festival a one of a kind experience and more importantly, a festival that can run alongside big names and stand the test of time.
