“This is not what we are all about. Amityville means ‘the friendly village’ and that’s what we are,” said a female Amityville resident to CBS New York about a recent drug bust.  “I’ve lived here for a long time and it really breaks my heart to see it here again.”

The “it” she is referring to must be a large-scale cocaine operation. Nineteen Suffolk County residents have been taken into custody on a drug bust tracked from California to New York. Homeland Security and Los Angeles police teamed up to seize 44 pounds of coke headed to Juan Funes’s home in Amityville. Funes is the supposed ringleader of the operation according to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.

Most of the players in the scheme worked legitimate jobs to mask their illegal endeavors. Funes owned and operated a house cleaning service on the surface and allegedly used his company trucks to transport drugs. According to CBS’s coverage, “Others owned a deli and a construction business. A taxi driver, house painter, insurance agent, landscaper and a day trader were also arrested.” Six of the suspects are being charged as major  narcotics violators and traffickers. Federal agents also seized a hefty artillery from the dealers. The haul was said to boast “19 handguns, 5 shotguns and 15 rifles, including an assault rifle.”

As the woman an mentioned earlier, the drug bust is said to have left a sour taste in the mouths of the residents of the upscale Amityville neighborhood. All of the detainees are still being held.
