In case you’re out of the loop, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, occurs when participants pour a bucket of ice water on their heads to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative nerve disease. Video of folks pouring ice water on their heads has been on everyone’s social media timeline.

Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Dikembe Mutombo, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and more have participated in the challenge. The disease is nicknamed Lou Gehrig’s disease in memory of the former New York Yankees great, Lou Gehrig who died from it..

Current New York Yankee, Derek Jeter took part in the challenge last week. Usually reserved and not a social media guy, he thought it was a great way to support a great cause. “It raises awareness which is the most important thing,” Jeter tells The Source.

“Anytime you raise awareness for a worthy cause, it means a lot.”

So what exactly made Jeter do it?

According to Jeter, Jennifer Steinbrenner, daughter of late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner challenged him to do it and the shortstop took it seriously. “When you get called out by one of your owners, you have to do it,” said the Yankees captain.

According to the ALS foundation, the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised over $94 million in donations this summer to find a cure for the disease.
