Show me the money! Apparently that’s what the Kansas City Chiefs have done for their quarterback Alex Smith. According to NFL league sources Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to a four-year $68 million deal.
Here’s the best part: $30 million of that contract is guaranteed money.
Along with his $7.5 million base salary in 2014, Smith will receive $75.5 million over five years—an average of $15.1 million.
So what’s the irony? Smith has a better contract than the team-friendly deal that his former teammate, Colin Kaepernick signed earlier this year.
The previous season, Smith suffered a concussion when he was the San Francisco 49ers QB. Subsequently, he lost his starting job to his incumbent, Kaepernick who played good enough to force the Niners to keep Smith on the bench
This season, Smith, 30, played well in his first season with the Chiefs, leading them to the NFL Playoffs. . Smith became the starter on new head coach Andy Reid’s squad that finished the season 11-5 and 2nd in the AFC West. The team lost 45-44 in the AFC Wild Card game to the Indianapolis Colts, blowing a 38-10 lead.
The Kansas City Chiefs open up their regular season at home on Sunday September 7th against the Tennessee Titans.
