Local grade school students in the Bronx got a surprise visit that they’ll never forget.

New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and his wife Amber Sabathia visited Kindergarten-5th grade students at PS 105 in the Bronx. While at the school, the couple handed out backpacks filled with school supplies to students during their first week of classes.

The largest elementary school in the Bronx, the Sabathia’s handed out 1,750 backpacks to the students as part of their PitCCh In Foundation Backpack Program. The program’s goal is to give out a total of 5,250 backpacks on the west and east coasts, with additional backpacks given to The Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Justice Program in the Bronx. “This morning was such a rewarding experience for everyone involved with the PitCCh In Foundation,” said CC Sabathia.

Also active in the Yankees ace’s hometown of Vallejo, CA, the PitCCh In Foundation distributed 3,250 backpacks to all 1st and 2nd graders in the Vallejo City Unified School District, as well. Each child will receive a backpack filled with school supplies that includes pencils, crayons, markers, notebooks, binders, glue, pencil cases, hand sanitizer and more. “We are humbled by the outpouring of gratitude we receive from the kids and are encouraged to continue growing the Backpack Program in future years,” said Amber Sabathia.

Since its inception in 2008, the PitCCh In Foundation has distributed over 20,500 backpacks. For more information on the Sabathia’s and their foundation visit www.pitcch.org
