Looks like the Philips Arena will be honoring a great very soon
As many of you NBA fans know, there are a few NBA arenas that honor past greats with life-size statues (i.e Staples Center and United Center) in the league. It serves as a “pay homage” moment and honor to those that shaped and paved the great reputation of those particular organizations. From the looks of it, the Atlanta Hawks are looking to show recognition to the great Dominique Wilkins with a “Larger-then-life” statue.
Today, the team announced their plans to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Philips Arena by building a statue to honor the Hawks legend Dominique “The Human Highlight Film” Wilkins. The statue will be officially unveiled on March 5, 2015.
According to Dominique:
”Being honored by the great City of Atlanta and my beloved Hawks team is incredibly humbling, I have to thank all the fans, the community and the Hawks organization, in particular the Gearon family, Rutherford Seydel and Tommy Dortch, who have been close friends and important figures since the day I was drafted,” said Wilkins. “I look forward to continuing my partnership with the team and the City for many years ahead.”
According to CEO Steve Koonin:
“There is no player more deserving of such an honor than Dominique for his continued commitment to the Hawks and the City of Atlanta. Beyond his amazing play on the court during his Hall-of-Fame career, he has been an ambassador for this franchise and the city for three decades,” Koonin said. “For all he has accomplished and continues to do for the Hawks franchise and the City of Atlanta, we are proud to bestow this permanent recognition of his legacy.”
Its about time Dominique was honored for his contributions to not only the team but also the city of Atlanta. Look for this statue to make it’s debut on March 5, 2015.
About time Dominique got a statue, but what about Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton in Seattle? or even Wes Unseld in D.C – @Drewtheabstract
