Christine Barberich and Piera Gelardi of Refinery29 have the kind of innate sartorial know-how the rest of the fashion world craves. Simply look at their thriving website for proof of the duo’s talent. So when the pair set their sights on creating a book based on their mutual adoration of fashion, the project was already ordained to be quite a fabulous read. Last night at The Sky Room of The New Museum, Barberich and Gelardi debuted their much-anticipated, innovative tome Refinery29: Style Stalking for the fashionista who needs extra inspiration.

Barberich took a moment away from the DJ set, lively conversation, and free-flowing cocktails to discuss personal style, street style, and the impetus behind the book. Barberich stated that the types of ensembles documented in the book—and the women wearing them—were associated by a common thread of confidence and individuality. “I think there’s a feeling you get when you see someone wearing something you know they feel really good in, something they feel confident in”, says Barberich. “For us, the thing that connected those moments was women that really dressed for themselves.”

On the subject of her own personal style, Barberich shared a few trade secrets and preferred designers of her own. Rachel Comey is a favorite of the editor, who was wearing a brilliant crimson dress by the designer to the event, as well as a number of pieces from her vast vintage collection. The takeaway from Refinery29: Style Stalking? Choose pieces that make you feel extraordinary, and always have a vintage piece or two tucked away for a special occasion.
