At SculptureCenter’s annual benefit gala after party, hosted at the Edison Ballroom on Tuesday evening, innovation and artistic excellence abounded.
In Celebrating SculptureCenter’s “past, present and future,” it wouldn’t have been a SculptureCenter event without the delightful balance between the extremely unusual, the wonderfully approachable, and the undeniably fun. For example, the few TVs and a large projection over the DJ booth were video clips of newscast following a hurricane completely with Doppler radars and billowing palm trees. It was an interesting contrast to the DJ bumping as much Nicki Minaj and Rihanna as he was playing deep house remixes. As for art, there was a special installation by Radamés “Juni” Figueroa, an artist project and performance by Gobby, the unveiling of limited editions by Allison Katz, gorgeous tablecloths arranged in delightful patterns and Pamela Rosenkranz’s innovative use of semi-precious stones and technology. Other fascinating bits were a fresh fruit-juice fountain and the fun photobooth by Win McCarthy, which translated to a live piece being projected above the crowd. Of course, works shown can be purchased, with the Pamela Rosenkranz works starting at $3,000 for an edition. SculptureCenter has had a banner year, with a well-received expansion to its Long Island City based location, and its newest exhibit, “Puddle, pothole, portal” on view now until January receiving rave reviews. It is located at 44-19 Purves St, Long Island City, NY 11101.
