While you were ranting, Wendy Williams was sipping her tea.
With strong opinions being expressed via social media, The Breakfast Club (Charlamagne tha god dubbed the Lifetime Network Donkey of The Day), and Timbaland’s rants, many were left wondering what the opinionated talk show host and executive producer of the controversial Lifetime film Aaliyah: Princess of R&B had to say.
“I see my Aaliyah movie broke the internet this weekend, ” she stated on The Wendy Williams Show this week. Williams chose not to focus on the negative comments but instead focused on the positive, stating that she was pleased that the film garnered 3.2 million viewers.
“Everybody’s got an opinion.” she said “Whether you loved it or hated it, you watched it. It was the second highest rated movie on cable this year.”
While much of the critique weighed heavily on the poor casting choices, controversy with the Aaliyah’s family, and weak script, Williams went on to praise the film for it’s positive portrayal of the deceased singer.
“As a black woman, I was proud to show that Aaliyah came from a two-parent family, which many of us don’t.” she stated. “I think when you do a movie about people’s favorite, whoever that favorite is, people are always going to have some criticism. You really can’t win for losing, kind of sort of.” This isn’t William’s last project with Lifetime. She will be starring in a featured holiday film on the network titled Santa Con due to air on December 13th.
