Whoever says you have to go to film school or own fancy equipment to be make a successful documentary, never met 11 year-old Zachary Maxwell. The precocious New York City fourth-grader behind Yuck: A 4th Grader’s Short Documentary About School Lunch, has been turning heads and snagging awards for his investigative reporting on the grossness of city school lunches.
In his 20-minute film, Maxwell reveals how school lunches that the Department of Education advertises as ‘delicious and nutritious,’ are anything but. The film, which sprouted from an argument Maxwell had with his parents about wanting to bring his lunch instead of eating the food provided at school, was secretly shot with a mini-video camera during lunchtime.
Yuck has already managed to snag several film festival awards, and the documentary is scheduled to screen at the Manhattan Film Festival next month. Check out the trailer below.
