O M G.

Films like The Town and Heat have appealed to the inner bank robber in us all, and now the good folks over at Rockstar Games will give us an opportunity to live this fantasy out — virtually. Grand Theft Auto Online will be rolling out its “Heists” mode early next year, fulfilling promises made by Rockstar when the game released last year and catering to the cries of millions of gamers worldwide. Rockstar gave IGN some insight as to what can be expected from the mode in a recent interview:

So we started working on the concept: a series of multi-tiered missions featuring diverse prep work, a range of different types of gameplay and a big finale, where team coordination and playing your own distinct role could make the difference between success or failure… As it turns out, creating missions of that complexity for multiple players at the same time was much more difficult than we anticipated and every time we thought we were close, something would send us back to square one.

Heists mode will allow players to team up with each other online to plan and execute various heists, with each player playing a specific role — leader, getaway driver, and tech guy — with each role providing a unique experience and perspective on the robbery. Heists will add about 20 additional hours of gameplay, so although we’ll have to wait until next year, but the trailer above makes it seem like the wait will be worth it.
