The Owings Mills woman shot by the man believed to have murdered two New York Police Department officers Saturday afternoon has been identified as Shaneka Nicole Thompson, 29.

Baltimore County Police have released the initial “wanted” poster of Ismaaiyl Abdula Brinsley that was sent to New York Saturday, in reference to the wanted subject from the Owings Mills shooting of Shaneka Nicole Thompson, 29, at the 10000 block of Mill Run Circle in Precinct 3/Franklin. The same suspect linked to the shooting that occurred just before 6 a.m. Saturday, where a female victim was shot in the stomach and the suspect fled, is linked to the killing of NYPD Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu Saturday in Brooklyn.

The Official Baltimore County Police & Fire Facebook page posted at 9:15 a.m. December 20:

Detectives hope that the interview with Thompson will shed light on why the suspect came to Owings Mills and why he shot her. Brinsley’s address is unknown and detectives believe he has no ties to the Baltimore area except Thompson. Based on preliminary information from other sources, police believe that Thompson and Brinsley had a previous romantic relationship, and they believe that relationship dates back less than a year. They have no children together, and Thompson lived alone at the Owings Mills apartment complex.

Despite the media’s attempt to make this incident a gang related event, there is no indication of prior criminal activity by Brinsley in Maryland, detectives say, nor is there any confirmation of gang affiliation. He was no martyr or member of the Black Liberation Army, as some outlets have erroneously reported. According to his social media activity after the Owings Mills incident he was more than likely on the run, and the cop killings were his way of “going out with a bang” as some may say.
