“New York’s Finest” simultaneously show their solidarity and distaste for De Blasio with a silent protest at slain officer’s funeral
During the funeral services for Officer Rafael Ramos in Queens yesterday, hundreds of uniformed officers showed their displeasure for Mayor Bill De Blasio in unison by turning their backs on the mayor, who was being shown live on screen to the 25,000 officers and civilians who were in attendance.
This silent protests comes less than a week after De Blasio requested that all demonstrations are discontinued until after Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu are laid to rest. Both officers lost their lives on duty last Saturday in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn when a lone gunman shot them in the head while sitting in their patrol car. The shooter, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, traveled from Baltimore after shooting his girlfriend and killed the officers in less than 12 hours.
The NYPD and specifically, police union representatives, have held animosity towards the mayor because of his decision to publicly address misconduct within the ranks of the NYPD. They also accuse De Blasio of fanning the flames of distrust between the Black community and the police department in the wake of the recent grand jury decisions involving the killings of Eric Garner and Mike Brown by police.
The shooting of Ramos and Liu occurred less than two weeks after the nationwide demonstrations and protests in response to a Staten Island’s grand jury decision not to indict Officer Daniel Panteleo for using an illegal chokehold to kill Garner. The only person to be indicted in the case was Ramsey Orta, the 22 year old Staten Island resident who recorded the entire incident which prompted the father of six’s untimely death.
