Since the Dec. 22 shooting deaths of Officer Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu traffic tickets and summonses for minor offenses have plummeted 94 percent

The Police Benevolent Association’s call last week to not make arrests “unless absolutely necessary” suspected to be the origin of the changes in crime rates. With low-level policing this week, comparing the crime levels during this time frame last year; stats are showing citations for traffic violations fell by 94 percent, from 10,069 to 587. Summonses for low-level offenses, like public drinking and urination plunged 94 percent, from 4,831 to 300. Even parking violations dropped by 92 percent, from 14,699 to 1,241. Drug arrests by cops assigned to the NYPD’s Organized Crime Control Bureau, which are part of the overall number, dropped by 84 percent; from 382 to 63.

One NYPD officer told the NY Post:

I’m not writing any summonses. Do you think I’m going to stand there so someone can shoot me or hit me in the head with an ax? I’m concerned about my safety, I want to go to home to my wife and kids.

Statistics obtained by The Post show a dramatic drop in NYPD activity between Dec. 22 — the first weekday after the double cop assassination — and Sunday, compared with the same period last year.

So if crime has dropped then that’s a good thing; right? Well despite the fact that the NYPD is basically on strike against the Mayor and the city of NYC, it’s good to know that our communities are civilized enough to police themselves. Not having to worry about walking down the street and being harassed by cops, which is the norm for some, is quite a relief I’m sure. Perhaps this will prove that police should be more concerned about the crimes that matter; rather than just trying to meet quota.

We recognize that the policeman is not merely an officer of the law, not merely there to enforce the law, but that the policeman has discretion in enforcing the law, and can determine when and under what circumstances (to a good extent) the law will be enforced, and against what people, regardless of how that law is written.
