Check out the exclusive interview: TheSource.com visited Richmond, VA to sit down with reality show star Blu from Bad Girls Club season 12
Thesource.com: Welcome to Richmond, is this your first time here?
Blu: Thank you, yes it is my first time, I wanted to come here…..hold up this is my part. (Referring to KeKe Wyatt singing ‘If only you knew’ on her computer) She don’t get the recognition she deserves. She’s probably one of the best singers since Whitney Houston…she is crazy; however every woman is a little crazy. I feel like she has a reason, we all have our own reason, people judge celebrities so much.
Thesource.com: What was life like growing up?
Blu: From the age of 6 to 23 my life was mapped out. I knew I was going to school and going to practice. The majority of my life I played basketball and went to school that’s what I did. I got my bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Thesource.com: Do you ever think about going back to school?
B: That’s what I wanted to do but I didn’t wanna um… (Pausing looking out in front of her) it’s consequences to everything you do. I had a full ride on basketball; I was in the position to go back to school for free once I was finished with my undergrad. I got into a fight my senior year of college and I was suspended for 190 days. I got out of the school mentality when I got kicked out of college and I was like, I don’t wanna go back. I don’t have any regrets though.
(Tevin Campbell comes on and Blu stops to sing)
Blu: I love RnB.
Thesource.com: Who is your favorite artist?
Blu: I’m a Brian McKnight fan all day long. Brian McKnight is my favorite artist.
Thesource.com: What’s your favorite genre of music?
Blu: Gospel, I could listen to a gospel song and start crying right now, that’s my church, it speaks to me. My grandma a preacher, she a lo-key thug.
Thesource.com: Let’s talk about Bad Girls Club, seems like everyone on the show is a lesbian, is that one of the requirements to get on the show?
Blu: I don’t know what it takes to get on Bad Girls Club, I tell everyone to just be yourself.
Thesource.com: So are you into men or women?
Blu: I think I’m just living. (as she laughs)
Thesource.com: Right now are you dating a man or a woman.
Blu: Right now I have a girlfriend, Jenn, she was on Bad Girls Club too. Well I think we together, I don’t know, whatever it is, I think we together since June or July. I just don’t know if I want to be in a relationship, period. No matter who I date right now I feel like I’m short changing them because 80% of what I do is for me. She’s not a bad person, I’m just going through a selfish stage right now, I’m thinking about self.
Thesource.com: How does your family feel about your success and sexuality?
Blu: They are supportive. I did what my parents asked me to do, I graduated college. So when I went on the show I said why don’t y’all just support me, and they did. My mother is so proud of me. When I told her I was gonna do the show she told me don’t do it…blah blah blah, but when she saw I was gonna go through with it she just got on board; very supportive. She don’t like my lifestyle as far as dating women, but she loves her child.
Thesource.com: Do you feel like you were portrayed wrong on the show?
Blu: I can’t say I was portrayed wrong, they portrayed me how they wanted to portray me. They portrayed me like I’m a lesbian.
Thesource.com: You just told me you were dating a woman, but you say you’re not a lesbian, explain yourself.
Blu: I’m bi; I was dating a guy at the time I went in the house.
Thesource.com: What made you start talking to girls and what’s different about being with a woman?
Blu: This is gonna sound so arrogant, I had all the dudes I wanted, when I turned 18 my best friend told me she liked me I started dating her, I was like girls like me, so I started doing it for fun. Women have more ambition than men. I’m attracted to ambition.
Thesource.com: Spending so much time with 6 other girls on the show, Is there anyone on the show that you wanted to fight?
Blu: All of them, except Lo, are on some fake sh#* so I don’t deal with nobody on the show except Lo.
Thesource.com: What projects are you working on now?
Blu: I’m working on a clothing line called Feeling Blu. I’m in the studio right now with my brother, and I just released a song last week called ’1x’ (one time); clubs are already playing it. I am really interested in modeling and acting as well, so I’m looking for an agent. I started something called (BGC) Blu’s Grade Challenge, for kids that get good grades. I personally fly to their school and eat lunch with them.
Thesource.com: Is this your first time recording?
Blu: No, one of my best friends has a studio so I was always in there rapping.
Thesource.com: How is Blu’s Grade Challenge going?
Blu: I did it once; I put a hold on it due to Ferguson, me being from St. Louis I’m very much involved in that.
Thesource.com: How do you feel about Ferguson?
Blu: It hit so close to home because I’m right there; that’s family. I let it be known that they (police) use their badge to get away with things. I try to tell people it’s not about race; it’s about power over poverty. It just so happens the majority of blacks live in poverty.
She excuses herself to get ready for the night. She comes out wearing Pharell’s Lime green satin snap track jacket, red fitted sweats, and some Jeremy Scott kicks. Her hair was in the signature Blu style; loose and all over. When we got to the club there were blue lights and fans everywhere. After we took pictures with her fans, Thesource.com was able to squeeze in one last question before Blu got on the mic; the DJ threw on her song.
Thesource.com: What do you want the Blu fans to know?
Blu: Go listen to my song ’1x’, and I’m just living doing what makes me happy; my current significant other is making this happiness effortless.
