What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy. Read what the film’s star Kevin Hart told us exclusively about working on the film:
In the movie, you and Josh Gad have great chemistry, can you speak about working with him?
Kevin Hart: Josh is a great guy, I got lucky. I got really, really lucky. Josh, not only is an amazing talent and is an overall good person and we gelled before filming the movie which made it so much easier when we actually got to the set and started shooting the movie. Our chemistry was instant, non-stop and I think that because of that we were able to go places and achieve things that we didn’t expect to do. We go to ground the material and make it believable by literally channeling into a very very charismatic setting that wasn’t really supposed to happen.
What was it like working with writer/director Jeremy Garelick?
Kevin Hart: Jeremy is good. This is his first time. I just respected Jeremy for the simple fact that he basically stepped into a situation where he stayed true to the project that he believed in. This script was around for years. The script was around for ten years, and he wanted to direct it, he wanted to fully be a part of it from start to finish and the studios that weren’t willing to do that, he didn’t want to make the movie and everything happens when it’s supposed to. Then myself and Josh came along at the best time, the best possible time.
The film is so funny, absolutely hysterical. There was one scene where the Grandma caught fire. What was your favorite scene to shoot?
Kevin Hart: The scene where Josh and myself were on the lawn chairs at the pool, that was probably my favorite scene because that’s where we got to give the characters some – I guess you can call it – the back story. We got to do the back stories for the characters and in doing that, that’s where they got depth, that’s where the characters were able to be grounded and that’s an important moment because as crazy and all-over-place as this movie is with the comedy, you need the parts that ground the emotion and that scene is one of the most important scenes where we were able to do that.
Also in the movie, there was a dance off, who would you say the better dancer is you, Josh or Kaley?
Kevin Hart: By far me, not even a comparison (chuckles).
What was it like reuniting with Jenifer Lewis?
Kevin Hart: I love Jennifer. Jennifer is funny, we’ve done a several movies together. She’s like my aunt – my aunt with a foul mouth!
If you had to assemble a group of comedians to be Josh’s groomsmen, who would you pick?
Kevin Hart: If I had to assemble a group of comedians, I would take Jerry Seinfield, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, and Steve Harvey.
This film marks another great collaboration with you and producer Will Packer, can you speak about that and what you admire about him.
Kevin Hart: That’s my right hand man. I’ve done several projects with Will and I think that all of Will’s projects that I’ve done, Will has basically showed me that he has my best interest and he’s always made sure that I was good, he’s always made sure the material was good, that we had great crews, great directors, great dp’s and a great cast. He has my trust. When you have that, there is no room for questioning or for doubt and I totally believe in him, and totally believe in what he’s done. I stand by him and I ride for him.
Do you have any funny stories from any wedding you have attended?
Kevin Hart: I can honestly say that literally … with all the weddings that I’ve been to I’ve been the comedic relief. Get to drinking, everybody is having a good time, get to talking and joking, there hasn’t been anything crazy that has happened, but I just love the fact that I can walk out from all of those situations saying that I was envious of the the bride and the groom flat out.
In the movie your character threw a crazy bachelor party, have you been to any crazy bachelor parties?
Kevin Hart: Me, never. That’s one thing I wish I did.
There’s also a great football scene. Do you have any favorite football teams?
Kevin Hart: I’m an Eagles fan.
The film hits theaters this Friday.
